Cobweb Club 2013 – “UNDEAD!”

It is no secret that just about my fave aussie alternative club is the Cobweb Club, which plays goth, deathrock, punk, post-punk and wave.  OK so I may be a little biased, having DJ’d at a few, but it is one of those events I just can’t miss. And neither should you!!

This is a reminder that this Friday, January 25, is the next instalment of the Cobweb Club extravaganza. Theme? Undead. Whether vampires or zombies, mummies or ghosts, demons, skeletons, wraiths, ghouls, or any other party animal without a pulse, you’ll be sure to find some likeminded spirits in the Cobweb Club Catacombs!

So there is your license to go to town costume wise – and there are prizes, from Gallery Serpentine, Death Rattles and more. So hop to it!

I’m already very excited, and have spent many hours researching my costume/look. I’ve been reading up on theatrical make-up – not just cosmetics, but 3d effects like wounds, wrinkles and creating skin abnormalities with prosthetics. If it works out, I’ll do a tutorial. If not…well, I’ll post pics of my miserable attempt. For now, I’m envisioning something like a female version of the Gentlemen from Buffy the Vampire Slayer…but we’ll see 😉

But back to the club night itself. For a peek at what I and others have worn, here are some photos from previous Cobweb Clubs.

Evil Queen & Big Bad Wolf at Cobweb Club

One of my favourite clubs was on Friday night, namely the Cobweb Club. The theme was “Spellbound” and we were encouraged to dress in something ghoulish, goblinish, fairytaleish or fantasy-related.

Since I wasn’t DJing this time, I could spend time on my costume and make-up.  After much to’ing and froi’ng, I decided to go as an Evil Queen. Not the Disney Snow White one, not the Huntsman one, just a generic Evil Queen. Probably the best photo taken was by the professional photographer at the club, Brendan Macpherson.

Here are a few we took at home (click on any pic to see it full size):

PVC ballgown skirt & bolero with puffed sleeves: Artifice Clothing Canada
Black PVC corset with red ribbon trim: Deadlygirlz Corsets (sadly, they no longer make corsets)
Evil Queen crown: In Visible Light Enmore (with extra skulls sewn on by me)
Skeleton bone hand necklace used as headpiece: Kreepsville 666
Black collar with fluting & high collar: No:Wear Fashion Design Camden
Black shoes with spine heels: Dsquared2
Spine cuffs: Studio Alta Shinjuku, Rock gyaru store Fernopaa

Skull contact lenses: In Visible Light (see close up of skull lenses here)

There were quite a few Red Riding Hoods running round, but my fave was my friend Maddy’s look, seen here with Dom as the Big Bad Wolf:

I do love a good excuse to dress up. Have you been to any good clubs or parties lately where the costumes made it a memorable time?

Cobweb Club B-grade horror night

I may have left this a little late to promote, but tomorrow night is the premiere of the Cobweb Club in its new premises at the Imperial Hotel in Erskineville. Woohoo! It’s 5 minutes walk from my house – score! This time around I’m not DJing…but that’s good, cos I can spend time on my hair, make-up & costume beforehand…and drink the bar dry! (not that I’m encouraging immature behaviour). EDIT: I did indeed DJ that night..3rd time now!

Deathrock Club B-grade horror movie theme

I’ll let the Cobweb Club spruik itself:

Calling all creatures from the Black Lagoon! Sydney’s only dedicated goth rock, punk, deathrock and post-punk club is back, and we’re bigger and better than ever! And at $10, it’s a bloody bargain!

On this night, we’ll be transforming our venue into a B-Grade Horror Movie delight, so start planning your ooky, spooky, creepy, crawly, nightmarish costumes now! There will be prizes for the best (and most creative) outfits, so brush up on your knowledge of things that go bump in the night…

We’re also excited to bring you something that rarely happens in goth clubs any more… vinyl DJing! Two of our DJs will be playing a midnight versus set of new and classic goth, punk and deathrock tracks. Come and have a dance to records that might be older than you are!

This time round, we’ve got the keys to one of Sydney’s newest venues, with an airconditioning system that will leave you as chilled as the grave, despite the summer heat. It has over 4 million dollars of sound, lighting equipment and venue design, and best of all, it’s right off King St in Newtown.

I’ve written about the Cobweb Club here before – Out Come the Bats!,  My First DJ Gig at Cobweb Club, and Outfit for Cobweb Club. For a taste of the last one soundwise, here’s a YouTube Playlist of Cobweb Club Oct 11, or for the playlist itself see here. It is, of course, one of my very fave clubs, and one of the few goth clubs here that don’t play EBM or Industrial. The fashions are always stunning, as are the props, and I have a feeling this one will be the spooky-ookiest one yet! I know there’s going to be creeping fog along the floors, muahahahaha!

If you’re in Sydney, I hope you can come along. It’ll be a blast!

My first DJ gig at Cobweb Club March 2011

I had my first DJ gig on Saturday night at one of my fave Sydney clubs, the Cobweb Club, held at Hermann’s Bar. (I’ve written about the Cobweb Club before – and some pics are here too)

The Cobweb Club plays deathrock, goth and post-punk music..and sometimes has bands, as we did on Saturday night: “Strangers in the Dark” and “Box of Fish”.

As always, there were cobwebs and draped stuff hanging from the ceiling for a spooktakular effect:

I’d compiled a playlist of some old faves, some songs that don’t get played as much as the big hits, and some songs by new bands. After consulting with Kat, the DJ I was going head-to-head with, I decided on some hits first, as we were playing straight after the bands. Have to keep the punters dancing!

As for what I wore, it was a cobweb top from Topshop (not seen), t-shirt gifted from 13th Moon, jacket with safety pins and bat and cobweb motifs from GLP, striped patent Deadlygirlz corset, old black skirt, zombie leggings and platform boots from Yosuke at Marui One.

The Damned’s “New Rose” started off my set, and others I played included Siouxsie’s “Kiss Them For Me”, “Millenium” by Killing Joke, “Walk the Line” by Alien Sex Fiend, and my wild cards by newer bands, “Paper Dolls” by Christ vs Warhol and “Gravedance” by 13th Moon! Luckily, people kept dancing the whole time, and some came up to give a thumbs up, ask what a song was, or say how much they liked the music. Awesome!!

All in all, a fun experience for me, and one I will certainly be repeating before too long. The only thing that went wrong really, was after the set. I was walking towards Dom and there was a row of low cube footstool pouf things, but one was a little out of line with the others, a bit further forward, which I hadn’t clocked. Well, one minute I was walking, next thing – BAM! I was down on the ground, after painfully falling on my shoulder, and biting my lip and cheek inside and out. Got up with blood trickling from the corner of my mouth…and the bouncer watching. Oh, my.

I’d keep wiping it but it kept bleeding, so I realised my best bet was to cut the partying short and go home. Oh noes!! We always stay til the end.  Shoulder and puncture wounds are healing nicely now, so don’t worry. It was mainly my pride that was hurt :/

Sydney Ska and Deathrock this weekend

Just a quickie as my mum-in-law is in town and staying with us, and Candice aka SuperkawaiiMama is in town and I’m meeting up with her tonight. Argh – so much going on! Not to forget the Nuffnang Sydney Bloggers Christmas Party at the Bavarian beer Cafe next Wednesday.

So, for now, just a poster of the gig Candice and I are heading to tonight – a touch of ska! Actually, more than that – it’s MAXIMUM SKA!! Any Sydneysiders at a loose end – you know where to come 🙂

There are a number of ska events, notable at the Annandale Hotel this weekend..but a person only has so much room in their social calender!!

Tomorrow night is one of my fave laid back clubs-in-a-pub – Ascension at the Sly Fox. Especially as one of our fave deathrock DJ’s from the Cobweb Club will be playing – Anorexic Dead! Again, if you’re in the vicinity and like a bit of old-school – you know where to come. And now, back to re-dyeing my new head of red hair, and preparing for meet-ups.

Have a great weekend!! Have you got anything planned?
