New Year 2013 asos outfit

Well, I’ve certainly had  time off from the interwebz over Chrissy and New Year – but here are my photos from New Year’s Eve!

I went to a fave club Black Cherry, forgoing my usual fireworks watching. It was HOT, so I wore a sleeveless River Island black bodycon dress with an exotic tribal design in gold foil front and back, from asos. (It’s still available in some sizes, at only $42.50!)

To this I added a black cowhide peplum belt – admittedly, I yoinked the idea from asos Fashion Finder, but I can’t find the blogger who posted the look. I did a quickie DIY leopard print to the shaved part of my head – not entirely successful, the print being too big and too dark, but it was eye-catching! Jewellery was minimal, being some spooky gothic earrings from Japan (a skeleton hand and zipper), skull rings also from Tokyo, and some gold Indian bangles from my trip last April. Net stockings and black platform shoes from Berjaya Times Square in KL  completed the look.

But onto the pics:

The Leopard Lounge Hair Salon Newtown

I shared my new hairdo a few posts ago; now it’s time to introduce you to the awesomeness of the Leopard Lounge vintage hair salon, where I got it done!

The Leopard Lounge is located in Brown Street, Newtown…just a hop, skip and jump from the main drag of King Street, at the corner of Wilson Street. Even from the outside, you can tell that this is no ordinary hair salon.

Salwar Kameez outfit with quiff updo

Ok, have let the blog slide again (even missing my 48th birthday last week!), but this is the week of getting back into it. Having seen the fabulous “Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” on the weekend, I’m inspired to share my Rajasthani adventures, including Jaipur and Udaipur as seen in the movie.

Today, I thought I’d show how it’s possible to wear Indian gear back at home, depending on the occasion.  I wore one of my fave salwar kameez tops with a skirt underneath instead of the pants, to Black Cherry club last month.  The photos also show off my exotic new metallic teal wallpaper, more of which will be seen in an upcoming interiors style post. Take a look.

Wallpaper: Harlequin, design Oriana.

As for my hair, I did a massive quiff-updo by using one of those hair donuts, which I bought in Japan. Here are some close-ups:

I simply backcombed my hair and sprayed it a bit to get some stiffness, then wrapped around the donut. At the back of my head I used another donut, put my hair in a ponytail and likewise wrapped the hair around it (although normally you’d pull the ponytail through it first). OK, so it wasn’t perfect in execution, as seen below from the back (and EEK! that elastic!), but it looked good from the side.  Neat and simple.

The actual product used was called an “Odango Cushion” which you can buy at Tokyu Hands, Okadaya and various beauty and chemist shops. In Australia, try Priceline for similar.

Have you used one of these hair donuts to build a style? If your hair is fine, they’re great. Have you worn clothing from another culture back at home – maybe an Ao Dai from Vietnam, or something tribal perhaps, in line with current trends?

January, looking forward, looking back

So how was your New Years Eve?  We just managed to catch the midnight fireworks then dashed back to Black Cherry Club, where we had fun hanging with friends…but failed to get any really good pics of our outfits 🙁

I was going to do a retrospective collage of last year…but failed to even get past January.  Looking back at last January – boy, did I have an exciting time!  (And boy, was MY hair RED!)

Starting off with my New Year’s Eve Celebrations in Sydney,

I high-tailed it to the airport on the morning of January 1 to fly to Tokyo. I wanted to be there for the January sales and fukubukuro bags, dontchaknow? I managed to do a lot of outfit posts on the blog (many in black, grey, leopard and fake fur)…quite a record for me.

I also caught up with a bunch of friends in Tokyo, hit a lot of stores including Marui One, Studio Alta, Shibuya 109 and Grimoire, took a few street snaps, and did a HEAP of shopping.

At the end of the month I celebrated my 6th wedding anniversary at the Big Day Out, with a cute hairdo with 2 top-knots.

And I headed out to a goth club in crimped 80’s style hair and danced for the first time in my spine-heeled d squared shoes, as well as my floral hair clip and jet beaded collar from Grimoire.

Hopefully I’ll have just as action packed a January this year, even if I’m not heading to Tokyo any time soon. There are a lot of gigs lined up, from The Damned, to Soundgarden, to Voltaire, to Sisters of Mercy, to Bad Manners, to Arctic Monkeys, and to the awesomeness of Big Day Out and Soundwave soon.

I also have 29th Jan to 7th Feb off, and am contemplating going somewhere new and relatively close for a week..Indonesia? Hit a beach resort, or over-the-water lake retreat in Java a la Anthony Bourdain?  Would love to head to Aceh with an armful of punk cd’s to distribute to the punk kids there who are being oppressed…but travelling on my own not perhaps the best idea. Or Bali – avoid Kuta and head to Ubud, where I’ve never been?

Or there’s always Malaysia, go somewhere I haven’t been before there…which leaves quite a lot. Anywhere in Asia would suit me fine. Hmm…any recommendations?

Turquoise beaded outfit for Xmas ‘do

Well, another work Christmas do is done and dusted….and as always, there are a few outfit shots to share!

We trained it into Circular Quay (near Sydney Harbour)…and took a few moments for some outdoor shots. Luckily, a breeze came up just as Dom was taking the snap and voila! Fluttery skirt.

Rather than go for a dress this year, I went with some gorgeous separates I’ve bought this year and not worn yet.

Vintage-looking beaded aqua top: Miss Selfridge
Curved hem pleated teal & aqua skirt: Topshop (now on sale for 12 pounds!)
Teal feather jacker: Sly (Japan)
Vintage necklace: my mothers
Teal platform shoes: RMK shoes

Posing in/by trains/boats ‘R’ us.

Yes, the fringe was EPIC FAIL due to the hot humid weather (and the curls dropped). It WOULD decide to become muggy just the day I want to dress up and catch a train! But I loved wearing this outfit and felt very olde-world glamorous – perhaps an updo might have been the go?

And now, onto preparing for my New Years Eve outfit….in which I’ll be viewing spectacular fireworks over THIS iconic bridge, before heading back out of town to Black Cherry nightclub.
