Neon Days

How about this neon yellow colour trend, eh? It just won’t go away – and I’m very happy about that! I’m obviously still very much in love with neon colour, even if I’m not exactly a cybergoth or raver these days.

I ventured out to Newtown to Just Feathers this week, and found some gorgeous goodies in that neon yellow/chartreuse colour that’s still so of-the-moment.  And everything I bought was between $25 and $39.95!

Firstly these leggings jumped out at me, with their tron/blade-runner/futurist bent and Prada-like 70’s honeycomb print. The yellow piping really pops against the black & white monochrome print. Thinking of my impending holidays, I kept my make-up neutral (no eyeliner!) and threw on a visor and loose skull-studded long tee from Glad News (Japan). Chartreuse platforms from my Korea trip last year, and neon yellow spiked cuff (from Just Feathers) completed the look.

(Minpin accessory not included 😉 But how many times can you spot him?)

Another great buy was this chartreuse top with flared peplum. Initially I thought it should be worn with a gently flared skirt (from Dotti last year) and a shirt underneath for modesty.

But this baby doesn’t HAVE to be ladylike…it can also be glam & clubby.  I decided to put it together with the leggings, a black corset belt from Cue and a studded skirt, sans undershirt (!) but with more dramatic make-up:

Yes, the hair also got a nice midnight-blue dye job – well spotted, those who picked it! The bright eyeshadows are by LimeCrime, the lipstick by Manic Panic.

To complete the cyber-y look, my white boots with cut-out platform from Esperanza in Japan (see this post) seemed an appropriate choice.

In the various shots here, you can see little vignettes of my living room (dark charcoal wall & metallic teal wallpaper opposite), the sunroom (zebra chair, palms & Indian carved wooden screen), and dressing room (dark wooden shoe shelves and wardrobe doors, plush zebra striped rug & black mock-croc chair).

I WILL be doing some interiors posts before long – just have to finalise some pieces before I unveil them to the world!

To cyber it up even more, I threw on this Spank neon yellow jacket with clear PVC panels, a black spiked collar, and a neon yellow see-through corset belt from LB-03 in Japan (see this post) – perfect for this ensemble! I love how clothing from my travels and my various past incarnations, can still come together in an outfit 🙂

Finally, I had to grab this comfy soft jumper (above) in a pastel yellow-green hue…and pair it with a metallic neckpiece that is made  out of lots of gold bobby pins (kirby grips for my o/s readers).  A very Mary Katrantzou-like dress was another purchase of mine, as seen right, but I will leave that for another outfit post (and yep, little dawg Fritz just had to get in these pics AGAIN!)

So if you happen to be near a Just Feathers store, or an outlet for the labels Smoke & Mirrors (leggings), Imprint (jumper) or Paper Heart (chartreuse top)  you might just wanna grab yourself a bargain.

So have you jumped on board the neon trend? Dipped your toes in with a bright satchel or footwear? Do tell!

Outfit blast from the past – blonde cybergoth in 2004

By way of reminiscing over my misspent “youth”, here’s a snapshot of October 2004, or thereabouts. Having gone blue and worn blue and purple synth dreads in the early part of the year, I decided to go blonde. Very light blonde. And start braiding other things in my hair. First there was colinette wool, then blonde synthetic dreads:

My wardrobe at the time was very cybergoth, consisting of PVC mini-skirts, PVC buckled patform boots, buckled PVC corsets (do you see a theme here?), and sometimes bright neon green raver accents.

There was also a fair bit of silver and metal thrown in there…like this metal bodice and spiked wristbands from Allycat metalware. (Yes, I still have them)

I also tried cyberlox for the first time – not just falls plonked on my head, but braided in to look more natural. I put a silver rinse through my hair first to try to match it. And here I am with the reigning queen of Sydney cybergoth at the time, Amelia aka DestroyX.

A close-up shows the silver on my face and arms..I just got some silver hairspray, closed my eyes, and sprayed like crazy. Shoulda got silver contact lenses. Oh well.

Amelia had fantastic falls she had begun making and selling, in foam, plastic and tubing.

Would I wear these today? Not really. You can still see girls wearing exactly this type of clothing, boots and hair – but they’re in their 20’s, and that’s probably as it should be. How old was I back then?

40 years old.

Yep. Yikes. Even though I undoubtedly looked good for my age, age-appropriate went right out the window. Still, you gotta give things a go. And if you’re under 40, I say to you…take a chance and wear something daring! Cos at least you know there was someone there before you, wearing something sillier. And it was probably me, #growing old disgracefully.

Birthday faux-hawk at the Foundry

A few weeks ago I celebrated my 48th birthday (I know – how absolutely horrifying!)

My friends and I headed to the dark alternative club downstairs at the Imperial, called the Foundry – you may remember I wore a gothic curly updo to the Foundry launch night in November last year.  Back then I used a curly hairpiece I bought in Tokyo at the Shinjuku Marui One store. This time I stuck with my own hair, but teased it up into a faux deathrock hawk – my theory is, the higher the hair, the slimmer the face looks 😉

This time around I moved away from cyber goth influences – no corset or PVC skirt here. I wore a combo I often do – many pieces from Japan (gothic and gal) mixed with aussie staples.

The outfit:

  • * black camisole
  • * h.Naoto Black Peace Now vest
  • * black & white striped Cue jacket from a few years ago (boy, you’ve gotta love their Winter ’12 pieces!)
  • * oversized cross from a gal store in Studio Alta, Shinjuku
  • * studded silver cuff from La Foret, Harajuku
  • * leopard bag from eBay
  • * (unseen) pvc pants from Bardot

The club was not quite as well attended as the previous few, but still a good night was had by all, and we’ll certainly be attending the next one.

The first few pics are from the beginning of the night, but from our personal camera. The last few are by the club’s photographer for the night , Christian McGuinness, and so are more professional, but we were drunker and siller!

For those interested in my beau’s groovy pinstripe shirt with the vinyl straps and silver snaps, it’s from US goth brand Lip Service, but purchased from Newtown’s Furr Hair. Go thee and get some cool gear!

That’s it really. Just wanted to throw an outfit post in amongst all of my recent travel posts. Have you dressed up recently for a birthday, dinner or club? What did you wear?

The Fashionate Traveller in India

Where do  I start with the awesomeness of India? The sub-continent is a kaleidoscope of sensory stimulation and wonder, exotic and infuriating, welcoming and alienating, rich in culture and heart.

Those who’ve read previously will know that I have already been 4 times in my twenties..but that was 22 years ago! How would it feel to return? How would my husband react? In the next few weeks I’ll be sharing my experiences  – and a gazillion photos – of my recent trip to Delhi, Agra and many cities in Rajasthan.

Of course, being style & fashion conscious, I had to buy some gorgeous salwar kameez to wear while I was there, and there’ll be a few pics  of those too. I love being inspired by the fashion of other cultures…and I adore the beadwork, metallic embroidery and general dreaminess of female Indian clothing.

The ladies of Rajasthan inspired me with their in-your-face sense of  colour as they clashed hues and pattern extravagantly, almost violently. Even the poorer rural women doing farming or labouring work displayed a joyous exuberance in their everyday dress.

My heart also went out to the many street dogs and puppies of India, more than I ever remember seeing before. It is sad that so many exist and have to fend for themselves on the streets, but interacting with them reminded me that dogs are dogs wherever they are, and  enjoy mucking around with a friendly human. So there are a few street-dog stories and pics coming too.

That’s it for now, as I have MASSES of photos to edit and organise. Stay tuned for my Indian adventures throughout May (and the odd Singaporean one too).

Have you ever been to India? What was your experience?

January, looking forward, looking back

So how was your New Years Eve?  We just managed to catch the midnight fireworks then dashed back to Black Cherry Club, where we had fun hanging with friends…but failed to get any really good pics of our outfits 🙁

I was going to do a retrospective collage of last year…but failed to even get past January.  Looking back at last January – boy, did I have an exciting time!  (And boy, was MY hair RED!)

Starting off with my New Year’s Eve Celebrations in Sydney,

I high-tailed it to the airport on the morning of January 1 to fly to Tokyo. I wanted to be there for the January sales and fukubukuro bags, dontchaknow? I managed to do a lot of outfit posts on the blog (many in black, grey, leopard and fake fur)…quite a record for me.

I also caught up with a bunch of friends in Tokyo, hit a lot of stores including Marui One, Studio Alta, Shibuya 109 and Grimoire, took a few street snaps, and did a HEAP of shopping.

At the end of the month I celebrated my 6th wedding anniversary at the Big Day Out, with a cute hairdo with 2 top-knots.

And I headed out to a goth club in crimped 80’s style hair and danced for the first time in my spine-heeled d squared shoes, as well as my floral hair clip and jet beaded collar from Grimoire.

Hopefully I’ll have just as action packed a January this year, even if I’m not heading to Tokyo any time soon. There are a lot of gigs lined up, from The Damned, to Soundgarden, to Voltaire, to Sisters of Mercy, to Bad Manners, to Arctic Monkeys, and to the awesomeness of Big Day Out and Soundwave soon.

I also have 29th Jan to 7th Feb off, and am contemplating going somewhere new and relatively close for a week..Indonesia? Hit a beach resort, or over-the-water lake retreat in Java a la Anthony Bourdain?  Would love to head to Aceh with an armful of punk cd’s to distribute to the punk kids there who are being oppressed…but travelling on my own not perhaps the best idea. Or Bali – avoid Kuta and head to Ubud, where I’ve never been?

Or there’s always Malaysia, go somewhere I haven’t been before there…which leaves quite a lot. Anywhere in Asia would suit me fine. Hmm…any recommendations?
